Popular Terms

agent of record (AOR)

A company that acts as an administrative buffer between a staffing company or employer and one or more independent contractors. An agent of record helps with back-office functions that involve hiring contractors and can charge for their services. AOR assist independent contractors and their clients throughout the entire duration of a job, from start to finish.

employer of record (EOR)

An EOR serves as the legal employer for administrative purposes while a worker carries out their duties for an end-hirer. They assume legal and financial liability for workers and handle back-office functions like payroll and compliance so you don’t have to. Outsourcing to one of these partners allows your firm to maintain its focus on revenue-generating activities while expanding to new geographic markets.

independent contractor (IC)

A self-employed individual under contract to perform services for an organization. An IC may work as a freelance self-employed individual or as one hired through the intermediary of a single-person corporate entity. ICs are usually free to perform work as they see fit, with limited or no control over how the work is performed.

professional employer organization (PEO)

A firm that partners with clients to act as the legal employer for some, or all, of their core workforce. A PEO functions as a co-employer, taking on some of the responsibilities of an employer, including liability for certain employment practices.
